Achievements

Over 60 years of construction and development, the Faculty of Agronomy has achieved many achievements in scientific research and technology transfer, in particular:

 Period 1956 - 1975:

This is a very important historical period, the results of scientific research on the foundation for the scientific research of agriculture in Vietnam. The research results were transferred directly to agricultural production, making a great change in terms of cultivation techniques, expressed in the following areas:

To study and elaborate a number of technical processes to increase the yield of rice and other crops. The results of the research had increased the yield of the crops and helped to build a solid rear for the struggle for liberation of the country.

Research on crop conversion and crop structure in which the biggest success was the conversion of Chiem rice crop to Xuan rice crop of scientists Bui Huy Dap, Dinh Van Lu and Nguyen Van Luu, 1964.

Experiment on the successful production of spring-summer tomato varieties in the Red River Delta (Ta Thu Cuc, 1968 - 1970).

To study and select short-term crop varieties and new crop varieties to be selected and transferred to farmers such as rice varieties: Agricultural 1 (NN1), 813 and 828 by Prof. Luong Dinh Cua, or Dong Xuan 1, Dong Xuan 2, Dong Xuan 3, Dong Xuan 4, Dong Xuan 5 varieties of Prof. Vu Tuyen Hoang, VN10 varieties (NN 75 - 3), A4 (NN 75 - 5) by Lecturer Tran Nhu Nguyen.

 Period 1976 - 1995

The process of breaking dormancy of potato, the process of cold treatment of vegetables (onions, garlic), lilies, using the product to increase the productivity of food crops.

Many new crop varieties have been selected from local varieties such as peanut B5000, Lotus hybrids 75 - 23, V79, soybean varieties M - 103, DT - 93, green bean DX - 04 varieties, rice variety DH60, stick 44, soybean V48, tomato MV1.

Agronomy faculty had succeeded in researching technical processes, transferring many technical progress on fruits and vegetables such as: successful application of grafting techniques on jujube and persimmon; import, selection and transfer new fruit varieties to the farmers like pomelos PUMELO, or Thien Phien jujube ...

Participate in basic surveys on insect pests and diseases in the North and Central Highlands.

Research on the construction of isolation areas to produce disease-free potato and investigate Vietnam's crops viruses.

Cooperate with scientists from the Ministry of Agriculture to set up standards for dry cassava in Vietnam

 The period 1996 - 2010

Successfully selected and put into production outside the production of pure rice, hybrid rice, soybeans, tomatoes with high productivity, good quality ...

Developed technical procedures for intensive cultivation of rice, maize, industrial crops, fruit trees, vegetables and flowers.

Researched on the impact of chemical pesticides on insect and diseases pests and environment.

Developed integrated pests management (IPM / ICM).

To study and apply of slow-releasing fertilizers, bio-preparations, plant vaccines and micro-elements for agricultural crops.

Application of biotechnology for agricultural production (tissue culture)

Collect and preserve gene sources of agricultural crops.

 The prominent achievements of the plant breeders of the Faculty were to create many varieties of crops recognized by the state, farmers in the provinces of Northern Delta and mountainous areas, directly increase yield, increase crops season for many large areas. The faculty also had three outstanding achievements in cross-breeding of the country: hybrid rice, hybrid tomato and soybean.

Scientists of the Faculty had successfully selected many crop varieties that were recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture such as: pure rice varieties DH60, 136, DH32, QC1, 256, HL 44, DH104, Huong Ngan, TN135; hybrid rice varieties: Viet lai 20, TH3-3, TH3-4; green bean DX044, Soybean M103, DN42, DH93, D104, V48; groundnut B5000; hybrid tomatoes MV1, HT7, HT9, HT10, HT21, HT135, hybrid papaya varieties VNDD9 and VNDD10. Technical progress: IPM on Sweet potato, ICM on potato & tomato, pellets fertilizer ... were recognized and widely applied in production.

 The period 2011-2016

Some crops varieties were recognized as: Rice pure varieties like Huong Com, DH6; hybrid rice: Viet lai 24, Viet lai 50, TH3-5, TH7-2, TH3-7, CT16, HQ19, TH5-1, TH17; hybrid tomato HT144, HT152, HT160.Technical progress: IPM on panicle rice mite was applied in many provinces. Initiative on "application of new techniques in isolation of single mycorrhizal fungi" applied in fungal diseases research.

 Publishing: In the last 10 years, faculty members have had an average of 30 to 40 articles a year, published in domestic and international scientific journals (including 6- 8 articles per year published in international journals). 22 scientific workshops were organized, including 5 international conferences. In the period 2011 - 2016, 25 curriculums were published, many of which were available for teaching and research.

 Scientific research and technology

 The Agronomy Faculty considers training and scientific research as two inseparable missions. Based on the regulations of the University, the Faculty has set many regulations and activities to enhance training, improving the knowledge of the staffs, promoting the research potential of lecturers and students, providing good conditions and equipment for enhancing teaching and research. Scientific and technological activities have been strengthened in many fields from research and application, technology transfer, consultancy, science and technology services for production and farmers.

The number and quality of the research topics of the Faculty has increased dramatically recently. The results of research on a number of subjects have been applied by localities and units. Many research topics have combined research to implement master's theses and doctoral dissertations that bring practical benefits, this research-driven approach is very effective for graduate students and phD students. The scientific research of students is promoted, contributing actively to improve the quality of teaching and learning of students. Many researches of students won the prize like Vietnam VIFOTEC ... The topics of scientific research within the framework of international cooperation are maintained and promoted. Many crop varieties, technical progress have been nationally recognized and expanded to be practical in production, some of which have been transferred to private companies with high value businesses such as seed transfer like TH3-3 hybrid rice with the value of 10 billion, the TH3-5 variety with the value 5.4 billion ... In addition, the number of scientific publications of scientists in the Faculty is constantly increasing, especially are published in prestigious international journal.

In the period of 2011-2015, the Faculty implement the tasks of the Protocol, the State-level subjects, the international cooperation subjects, the ministerial-level subjects and the research subjects of the University. During this period, there were 05 crop varieties and 02 technical progress recognized by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, publishing 26-30 scientific articles per year, including 10-12 articles in international journals. Especially in 2015, in particular there are 19 international articles published with high impact factor.

VISION, MISSION AND STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

Mission

To prioritize the development of basic research and application of crop varieties and cultivation and plant protection techniques in synchronization with new crops (industrial crops, vegetables, flowers, medicinal crops ...)

Continue to support the restriction of the key crops of the University (rice, tomatoes ...) and some new crops (salted vegetables, salt ...).

Specific tasks:

To research and select the breeding of key crops (rice, maize, cassava, tomato, cucumber, soybean, peanut, tea, sugarcane, citrus, flower) well tolerated with major pests and diseases, suitable for different ecological and farming conditions, especially for climate change.

Research on cultivation techniques and methods of integrated crop management for key crop varieties with high productivity and economic efficiency.

Research on key insect pests and diseases and integrated pest management techniques; Research new insect pests and propose effective preventive method.

To study and apply technologies of production of several biological or plant extract pesticides or natural enemies in service of sustainable agricultural production.

Research on integrated nutrition management for some key crops for different ecological zones; Study and apply some new fertilizers to some key crops.

To study advanced technical measures to produce safe and clean crop products and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

To study solutions to change the structure of crops and crops season and to use agricultural land effectively.

 Training and fostering research staff to form strong research groups and schools

To plan, train and develop human resources in a synchronous and balanced manner in each fields and specialist in service of scientific research, technology transfer and application in production.

Carry out the training and fostering of scientific staffs and technical staff in the specialized direction of each professional field, ensuring that every specialized field has leading staff.

Develop multi-disciplinary research groups that meet the needs of systematic research addressing a whole issue.

Recommended the University investing to upgrade and build new laboratories and research facilities reach national and international standards.

Through the ODA-VNUA project, the Faculty of Agronomy has the policy of building a research center for crops and medicinal crops with sufficient facilities for research on biotechnology and plant breeding, insects, plant diseases, medicinal plants ....

Search, exploit and utilize domestic and foreign funding sources for science and technology activities

Through existing relationships with domestic and foreign organizations, institutes and universities, to build projects to find funding sources for science and technology activities such as conferences, seminars, implementing science and technology tasks, investing in equipment for research ...

Promote scientific and technological cooperation with organizations and individuals; to build and develop a national and international research network

Determine proper scientific and technological tasks base on production requirements of farmers, enterprises, market demands, strategies and programs for socio-economic development of the whole country, industry and locality.

To prioritize scientific and technological tasks with the participation of enterprises or affiliated with international scientific and technological organizations.

Encouraging cooperation with enterprises to carry out scientific and technological tasks from enterprises 'funds for research and development of scientific and technological products according to enterprises' demands.

Encourage cooperation with enterprises to provide human resource training services to enterprises, combined with training high quality human resources from the students of the University.

Science and technology services

To intensify the research, experiment and assay of new processes, advances, technologies and crop varieties in order to promote the efficiency of applied research.

Organizing the development of demonstration fields and demonstration with high technology in localities or enterprises.

Propagating crop varieties, technological processes and new technological advances on the mass media.

Expected results

Stabilizing the organizational structure of the Faculty including 10 departments, 04 research centers and 05 specialized laboratories (appendix).

Fostering scientific staff and technical staff in a specialized manner to ensure that each professional field has leading cadres, ensuring that the proportion of cadres with postgraduate degrees in the research groups reaches a minimum 80%, of which PhDs degree for over 50%.

To build 03 research groups related to classification of material sources, selection of new crop varieties, improvement of production technology, pests control and transfer. Research group includes the experienced scientists and also has young scientists to nurture.

Recommended the University providing equipments and research funds for 5 specialized laboratories (under the scheme on building research centers for crops and medicinal crops).

Developing regulations on coordination between the Faculty and institutes, centers belong to University and other faculties in training and scientific research.

To annually test and experiment 1-2 new crop varieties, 1-2 technological processes; to build one or two demonstration field with hi-tech application.

Write 8-10 newsletters posted on the website of the Faculty about plant breeding, technological process, new technical progress.
