INTRODUCTION
The Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding was established in August 1965. We teach and perform basic and applied research on agricultural crops with the aim to provide knowledge, tools and products for an efficient and sustainable production of crop. Unique to the Department is the strong link between basic research and applied plant breeding. Department do research on crop biodiversity, trait inheritance to identify plant material with genetic variation in different traits. Identified traits are in some cases crossed into plant material for use in cultivar development at our Department. We have breeding programs on rice, tomato, legume and fruit for the cultivar development. Target traits in these breeding include increased yield, disease resistance, improved quality. Recent released cultitvar: (i) rice: Huong Com, Huong Viet, N91, NV1... TH3-3, TH3-5, VL24, VL50… (ii) tomato: HT166, HT160…(iii) Beans: VNUAD2, TX05. Our research is also directed towards evaluating crops with bioactive compounds contributing to human health and nutrition, and developing new varieties suitable for climate change.
